Dr. Brooks is associate director, Department of Biostatistics and Biomedical Informatics, MedStar Health Research Institute. He previously was an assistant professor, Department of Preventive Medicine, University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), Memphis, TN.
In his current position, Dr. Brooks develops, implements and administers data mining and management tools to facilitate advanced progress in biomedical research. Specifically, he manages a suite of clinical databases that provide research access to more than 29 million patient encounters across the MedStar system. He also provides clinical research informatics support and domain expertise to collaborators through the Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science. Dr. Brooks has experience in the logistics, planning and execution of complex clinical and translational research projects. In his previous position as associate director at the UTHSC-Oak Ridge National Laboratory Center for Biomedical Informatics, Dr. Brooks deployed a suite of secure, versatile data systems to serve the biomedical and clinical-research informatics needs of the faculty and other researchers. In addition to the REDCap data capture and management system and the i2b2 data mining tool, Dr. Brooks has experience with home grown data systems. His research has been funded by agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Department of Defense, and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute.
